Plaiting

Plaiting

Not always easy but the key to a neat and tidy plait is to keep it tight at the start. You can sew your plaits in using Plaiting Thread or use rubber Plaiting Bands to hold them in place.Remember you are aiming to enhance your horse's top line. If your horse has a heavy neck you want to keep your plaits smaller and finer to give the illusion of a longer, leaner neck.If your horse has a long, thin neck use thicker plaits higher on the horse's crest to thicken and shorten the neck.Top Tips:Try not to wash your horse's mane immediately before plaiting as it will be too soft and difficult to manage.Use a fly repellent gel to keep your plaits in place. Keeps the mane neat and tidy while keeping away flies.

Trimming the Face Area

Trimming the Face Area

For most horses, except, natives you should trim their bridle path, jaw, whiskers and ears. This maintains a neat and tidy overall facial appearance. Top Tip:If your horse is reluctant to allow you to work around its face with large electrical clippers use small silent clippers.

Trimming the Legs

Trimming the Legs

Keep your horse's legs looking tidy, you can use clippers to achieve this but this leaves the skin very exposed. Instead use scissors and a comb to leave hair longer, covering any undesirable marks or scars. Top Tip:Make sure you wash your horses leg thoroughly before beginning to trim.

Pulling the Mane

Pulling the Mane

Cobs are usually trimmed with their manes hogged. When pulling manes you need to think of the overall look you are trying to achieve. If you want to create small, finer plaits you need to pull the mane short while also thinning it.Top Tip:Remember if you are hogging and your horse's neck is weaker, hog well in advance of the show to allow time for regrowth.

Pulling the Tail

Pulling the Tail

Some horses can take a real dislike to this practice, to minimise stress to both the horse and human pulling should be introduced slowly doing a little bit each day to develop tolerance and acceptanceRemember when you cut your horse's tail it will most likely be in a resting position. Cut the tail approximately four inches below the horse's hock to allow extra length when the tail is carried in a higher position.Try to minimise the amount you brush your horse's tail to avoid pulling the hair out. Spray your horse's tail regularly with a mane and tail detangling product to prevent knots and to maintain a shiney fully bodied tail.Top Tips:If your horse's mane or tail are looking limp and thin try using a moisturising detangling product, such as- Show Sheen, regularly to strengthen the hair.To flatten stray hairs use a fly repellent gel, this will keep hair in place while also keeping away the flies.
